There are certain things that you look for in a Trans AM. There are certain years, models and options that set some of these birds apart from the entire flock. 1978 was a very good year for Pontiac and the Trans AM.  There were 100,000 TA's built in 1978.  So if you are considering the purchase of a Trans AM, you should try and make certain to purchase one of the rare ones. This is one of those cars!

There are some very unique Key Points that make a 1978 Trans AM so desirable. Lets look at a few of those points:

• It was the first year of the FISHER T-TOPS. These marked a huge increase in quality, fit and finish on the Trans AM as the T-TOPS were designed into the car instead of added on like the Hurst Tops were.
• Next, Pontiac upped the performance of the TA 6.6 \ 400 to 220 HP.
• It was the only year that the TA 6.6 motor was mated to the Specially built Turbo 350. This engine and transmission combination was uniquely configured with a higher stall converter and internals to support the additional 40 HP of the W72 motor.
• This combination was connected to a performance 3.23 rear axle ratio instead of the standard 2.56 or 2.73 that came in the standard Trans AM.
• Pontiac also included a unique shifter that had the ability to work in a Manual-Automatic mode letting you shift one gear at a time.
• Lastly, the WS6 option was added to the order sheet.  And you all know how important that is to have on your TA.  The 15x8 Snowflake wheels, special steering box and larger sway bars are just a few of the reasons this is such a great option.

This is the only year you will find all these options in a Trans AM. When you add that to a car that is painted the very unique Martinique Blue color, you have a genuine collectible Trans AM. And if you are not considering it for its inherent collectability, you will most certainly enjoy its superior performance compared to any of the thousands of regular Trans AM's that did not have these highly desirable performance features!
